This team sucked so bad last season that Laps looked like a stand out. I think now with all the speed and upgraded forwards out there, he is merely looking average. I don't think he has changed his game.

I agree...
...and BECAUSE he had a solid season last year, we all expect more from Laps. He's a SOLID third line center that will play in this league for a long time if he continues with the same work ethic and attitude.

I think Lapierre HAS been worse, in fact.
Last year he provided a spark on most shifts. Right now he's awfully quiet and is losing a lot of faceoffs and one-on-one battles for the puck.
I'm not that worried because he's gone through quiet stretches before and tends to recover quickly. The kid usually has one of the best work ethics on the team. Just because he's an idiot and yaps way too much for his own good doesn't mean he isn't a gritty, hardworking player. I bet his teammates appreciate him a lot and love the way he can throw opponents off their game and get his own team energized with his skating and effort.
My one issue with Lapierre: he is often lost in his own zone, not a good thing for a 3rd liner. Doesn't read the play well defensively.

Lapierre's doing ok, maybe not good enough for the 2nd line mind you.
Ok, I switched over to RDS tonight. At some point I couldn't take the combo of what sounded like a NESN (New England Sports Network - dumbest announcers in sports) guy teamed up with a Toronto guy teamed up with Maguire.
I heard about Maguire's rant on Lapierre though.
He's right, in a way, but who cares? It's Lapierre's job to be a rat. That's what he's there for, and he does it well. He probably should drop his gloves once in a while, fine. But basically he's paid to use his skating and get in people's face and be a general pain.
What gets me though is that when the Habs were playing the Laffs not so long ago, we got to hear the same stupid crew compliment Komisarek's maturity and focus for refusing to tangle with Moen after Komi's umpteenth facewash or crosscheck of a 5'10" guy from behind.
Oh TSN. Why do I bother?
And hey Barry, this entire board owes you an apology for giving you such a hard time when you recognized WAY before the rest of us that Komisarek is a complete loser.

Plouf- A smuch as I hate McGuire in some respects, he made the most bang on statement regarding Lapierre and Latendresse last night..if I can remember correctly:
" The whole league knows that the more those two yap, the less they want to drop the gloves. Sooner or later they are going to be embarassed by someone into doing it".
He is right. I fully understand the role of the agitator. But these two are getting to the point of embarassing us. Lapierre I will almost give a pass to because he is what he is. But Latendresse with his size?!? SOme of the french media keep claiming he is going to be a "Power Forward" which I laugh at. Lucic is a power forward. Neil, to an extent, power forward. Bertuzzi, power forward. What those guys have in common that Laps or Lats do not is that the opposition know that they will actually drop the leather and pound someone.

Lapierre is a freakin joke and an embarassment to the CH.
What is a bigger joke is that they play on the habs second line! I feel sorry for Plekanecs who has, in my mind, had a great start inspite of being saddled with these two goofs most games. And And-O I agree. IF Lats and Laps were Anglo, they would be sharing an apartment in Hamilton.
I find Lapierre can be a very good player if he thinks his job might be up for grabs. Any time he gets comfortable, he plays comfortable. And I agree with the rest of you - from time to time an agitator needs to answer the bell.

Nilan, I was never Lapierre's biggest fan but last night was the straw that broke the camel's back. If you're gonna agitate and someone in your weight class asks you to join them on the dance floor, you don't keep your mitts on and answer with stupid grins like he did last night. PATHETIC. I can't watch that guy anymore. He's dead to me.

he broke our hearts Otis. Even Crosby took on Ference. Just so soft in my eyes. What i dont get is why Lapierre danced with Maxime Talbot last season and not Ference. In my eyes Talbot is alot tougher than Ference.
Anyway, it was shameful and Lapierre just added to all the Habs haters case of the Habs being soft.
I mean all he had to do was take a few off the face and dry and connect with 3-4 shots and then just lock on and wrestle. It really isnt that much to ask.
Imagine how the rest of the guys on the bench felt.

Yeah yeah, Lapierre is a jerk and a wimp. It's true. But he performs a key function, and any team would like to have him on their 4th line, trust me. 2nd line is a ridiculous stretch.
I'm not sure if I could say the same about Latendresse though. What exactly does this guy provide at this point?
