"the code" is an old dinosaur that needs to go back in the ground. it's a joke and is to blame for more dirt than problems beings solved. it's supposed to be there so fights are fair (joke) but guys like BGL, who respect "the code" can't fight anyone but other goons. so what's the point?
time to bring hockey into the present and get rid of "the code" ... suspensions for staged fights to start. Automatic suspensions for headshots (hey NHL, protect your players for the love of God!) and you've got less reason to fight. Ref need to enforce the rules. The players need to catch up to the rules and not the half-assed approach they have now which is refs call what they feel like. Rules! Boys, it's like one game they call hooks, the next they call interefence instead (or it changes from period to period). No refs are the same and it's very frustrating. I'm willing to take 10-15 penalties a game until the game becomes what it should be - about skill, not terror.
who said you must take off your helmet in order to fight? f-o-r-e-c-h-e-c-k that. if someone wants to punch me in the face, he has to get through my gear first. what next? chest guard comes off so he can get clean rib shots?
hockey wil never be consumed by the masses until the garbage school-ground and gang rules are gotten rid of. refs need to get their superiority complexes taken care of too....
I like the way the NFL does it. that's what we need. Protect your QBs, call every infraction you see even if it did not impact the play (which is also a myth because everything impacts the game....a non-call means no PP which impacts the game). It might take 3-5 years for the players to grow up and obey the rules (the refs are a big problem too) but only then will we get to see the real beauty of this game. Soccer has nothing on what hockey can be - hockey is the real beautiful game. But it's becoming more about big hits than big goals.

Figs I cannot disagree with most of what you say but have to state this. Players (like Lapierre) who skate around instigating and yapping while wearing a visor need to be beaten silly with it. I have no issue with a player wearing a visor. In fact, I think they are nuts not to. But if you are going to skate all over the ice taking runs at guys and yapping, then be prepared to take it off!! As a goalie I was in 2 fights in my career. On both occassions I took my mask off because I felt it was unfair to have some guy beating his knuckles on wire. Hiding behind a piece of plastic so that your opponent beats his knuckles til they bleed whiel you have free reign as you wail away on his nose is cowardly IMHO.
i agree with that barry. if you start a fight, then, be a gent about it.
lapierre acting like he does usually only motivates the other team.
but why is he doing it? is it orders from the coach or is he just a pure pest (all bark, no bite)?
Pests motivate the other team for sure, but they motivate them to pay attention to the wrong thing. It's a classless but effective role to have on the team.
