The Lecavalier stuff is coming back.

More and more commentators (and not just Habs commentators) are saying that Vinny will be offloaded before the draft.

Obviously Montreal will be a possibility.

Personally I think it's 100% worth the risk. This franchise needs a shot in the arm and a gamble is totally in the cards. Of course Lecavalier could be damaged goods.

What would it take?

Does a package of the Kostitsyn brothers, Mathieu Carle, Tomas Plekanec, Jaroslav Halak, Ryan O'Byrne and 2 first-rounders seem about right? OR can we actually offer less because Lecavalier will be so hard for TB to deal with that contract?

I think you're right that Lecavalier's contract is going to be be VERY difficult to move. At this point, anyway. Don't forget though, T.O. has quite a bit of cap room as well (see Kolzig trade). They have tangible assets like Kaberle, who's NTC comes off, as does Kabina's (there's a window of ooportunity because they missed the playoffs again). Those two are already better than what the Habs could offer since most of the Habs' talent is UFA. There are other teams that would be looking for someone like Vinny as well. I'm sure that the Sharks are going to look to unload Thornton or Marleau or both if they don't advance, again, and that would open some space, I would imagine.

Toronto will not jump the gun and go for Lecavalier. They have some rebuilding to do. When you get a mandate to rebuild long-term, as Burke has, rarely do you pass it up. (see Gainey, Bob, c.2004)

San Jose is far from having the kind of salary flexibility Montreal has this off-season.

The good news is that Vinny was apparently coming cheaper than the massive offer I just put on the table.

I had Pleks, the Tits Bros, Halak and 2 1st round picks. Maybe we could get him even cheaper after this?

Boy would I laugh if Vinny demanded a trade as a result of this Gainey press conference.

Possible although Andrie Kostistyn's character is well known in the league as being weak...and now Sergie has followed suit. Not many team want these two clowns.

O'Bryne is not an NHl D-man

Plekanec is coming off an awful season

And Carle is never playing a game in the NHL...ever.

Now Halak.....teams are frothing at the mouth to steal this kid. He is better than Price.....

Andrei Kostitsyn has scored 20 goals two seasons in a row and has upside. In the right situation he might yet be a star. He has the tools that make GMs drool. Sergei was a stud under Dale Hunter. Clearly he responds to good coaching. There's hope for these two.

O'Byrne will be a regular NHL defenseman next year.

Carle will by two years from now.

One thing everybody knows, there's NO BETTER INVESTMENT than a Habs castoff!!!!!

Even Sergei freaking Samsonov is out there thriving for a contender while we are polishing the golf clubs.
