And-O....LeCavalier for Hamrlick and A.Kostitsyn..
why does Tampa Bay make this trade: because paying A.K and Hammer for one more season is better then paying Vinny for 9.. why does Montreal make this trade: he heard rumors of " we need a big trade for big centre"on GoHabs .com and he can't see past end of his nose effectively crippling the Habs Franchise for at least 5 more years...which by the way is how long his plan usually is for!!

Gainey's best move was NOT TRADING FOR Vinny. Wow. What a disaster averted. I really liked him until I checked out his career stats. People think Gomez is overpaid? Ouch. We may have a new leader in that field.
Imgine having no Markov (for ever) and only 60-70 pts for $10MM to replace him! Holy smokes, boys!

Make no mistake. Gainey would have gladly paid the $10M for a bonafide locally grown super-star.
Instead though...Gainey went on a 'bender' that was akin to a guy who was dumped by his girlfriend that phones her up at 3:00am blitzed out of his mind in order to beg for one more chance!!!
The Gomez deal was an act of TOTAL desperation.

Good eye, Figs. Vinnie has a career PPG average of .85 (compared to say, Saku Koivu at .80 - that's one more point every twenty games).
Back in the day when Guy Lafleur was signing a ten-year deal for one million total, a .85 PPG was considered good stats for a defensive specialist.

You have to admit though Ando, 10 million bucks for 9 (NINE!) years for a pushing-30 guy who's gone through several really cold streaks lately, hasn't gotten his team into the playoffs for 3 seasons, and appears beset by chronic, not-going-away type injuries, is a crazy risk. I'm not saying Gomez was a good deal, just saying Lecavalier might have been even worse. Especially if those rumours that Markov was part of the requested package were true.
I would agree on isolating Kovalchuk for next year. What about Marc Savard if we can't get a Kovalchuk? Also, did I hear someone say on a sports show that Vinny is miserable in Tampa, missing Vinny Prospal. May have been Bill Watters on AM640?
